An incredibly beautiful 3-day hiking tour around Triglav’s immediate vicinity. No demanding climbs, just exceptionally picturesque walks in Slovenia’s spectacular Julian Alps. It’s an unforgettable hut-to-hut expedition that takes you across Slovenia’s most awe-inspiring landscape. Witness unforgettably stunning views, encounter indigenous wildlife, taste traditional Alpine food and learn first-hand about Slovenian mountaineering culture.

This fantastic hut-to-hut tour involves around 5 to 6 hours of walking per day down trails of moderate difficulty. The routes around the Lake Bohinj area and towards Triglav’s Seven Lakes Valley are appropriate for most amateur hikers and offer beautiful vistas of the highest peaks of the Julian Alps.

The tour begins at the gorgeous Lake Bohinj and leads past high pastures dotted with grazing cattle, the source of famous Slovenian cheeses and soured milk. As we ascend further, we see the surrounding terrain become rugged and rocky while the trail itself remains relatively undemanding and pleasant. The scenery changes into majestic slopes with scarce alpine vegetation, the home of graceful wild climbers, such as the chamois or ibex. Don’t be surprised if we encounter a few of these local show-offs.

The trail then leads past pristine alpine lakes, each with its own shape, colour and story. The Triglav Lakes Valley or Seven Lakes Valley is something out of a storybook and is one of the best things you can experience in the Julian Alps. Rest assured, you will have numerous opportunities for scenic breaks along the way to really absorb the majesty of this special place. Nights will be spent sleeping in lovely mountain huts, deeply rooted in Slovenian Alpine tradition. Their cosy shelters offer a delightfully scenic atmosphere and delicious cuisine. For those most keen, there will be a chance to add an extra peak after each mountain hut we reach.

The tour is easy and not technically demanding, suitable for everyone with a basic level of physical fitness. Families included. The route is flexible enough to be adapted to suit beginners as well as the more experienced and eager hikers in search of adrenaline.

NOTE: It can be busy up there in the summer. To ensure your spot in the lodges, we recommend booking the tour several weeks in advance, especially for the weekends. For last-minute bookings, we cannot guarantee a free spot in the chosen lodge, but we will try our best or find the most suitable alternative for you.

Itinerary

We will start our tour by picking you up and driving to  Bohinj (45min from Bled). Our meeting time depends on the forecast and time of the year and will be set a day or two before the tour. After a quick gear check, we will start walking through the Voje Valley by the beautiful river Mostnica. After reaching a waterfall, the route goes up the forest and through mountain pastures, quickly starting to gain altitude before reaching Vodnik hut after about 5-6h. There is a freshwater spring there and a warm dinner before bedtime.

On our second day the route leads us through Velska Dolina under the south slopes of Triglav, reaching Dolič mountain hut after around 2h. After a break, another short climb awaits us before descending to Prehodavci lodge, for a well-deserved rest. The last part of the second day is the most scenic,  as we slowly descend through the beautiful Seven Lakes Valley, reaching Triglav lodge at Doule Lake for the night.

Our last day is easier as we walk through authentic mountain pastures descending back to our car. If there is energy left, there is also an opportunity to reach another viewpoint on the way. We are usually back at the car sometime around the early afternoon.

Day 1: 12 km (7,5 mi), 1300 vm (4300 feet)
Day 2: 12 km (7,5 mi), 600 vm (2000 feet)
Day 3: 13 km (8 mi), 100 vm (330 feet)

Things to know

Triglav is amongst the most popular mountains in Slovenia. It has a great symbolic value for us and the saying goes that you are not a true Slovenian until you stand on its summit. Therefore, you can expect a lot of people on the mountain in the high season (July-September), especially on weekends. On week-days, however, it is much more peaceful. Luckily, our guides have some tricks up their sleeves when it comes to avoiding the crowds. Hint: they know exactly when and where to go.

Thousands of people climb Mt.Triglav every year. Some come better prepared than others, who underestimate the climb, which can lead to accidents. But with the right approach, knowing the weather conditions (especially the possibility of thunderstorms and snowfall), with the proper safety equipment and an experienced guide, you can minimize the objective dangers and feel completely safe.

Mountain huts in the Slovenian mountains are very cosy and authentic, but provide only basic comfort. Don’t expect too much luxury. Early bookings are usually rewarded with a room but if all rooms are full there are dormitories. There is no shower and the lavatories are basic. There is running water but it is not drinkable. The food is tasty and local but the menu is limited to a few dishes and drinks.

The earlier the better. The highest season, from July to September, it is not unusual for huts to be fully booked for months ahead. Weekdays are better but we still suggest bookings at least a month in advance. Last-minute bookings are very dependable on the weather – if the forecast is not a perfect bluebird, then some spots usually become available a few days before.

It is important that your clothes are comfortable. You should have comfortable shoes with a good grip. It is recommended that you also have some warmer and windproof clothing with you as the temperature can drop or in case of cold wind. You can always leave excess clothes in the van after consulting with our guide.

In case of bad weather the tour can be postponed or you will be fully refunded.

The season stated is informative. In case of dry conditions, the tour is also possible sooner or later in the year. If there is early or late snow in the mountains the season is shorter. I that case we can always suggest an alternative.

We will make a reservation at the hut for you at the time of your booking in advance and you can pay cash on the spot. There are rooms available if you book early enough, otherwise, there are cheaper dormitories – let us know your preferred option. For half-board, having about 70 € with you per night per person should be enough.

We believe that your experience will be better in smaller groups. Therefore, there will be a maximum of 8 guests per guide.

The tour is flexible and it can be adjusted to your preferences, skills and fitness. Nevertheless, you should be comfortable with hiking for around 5-6 hours per day, with as many stops for breaks as you wish.

Kanjavec is at 2500m very high mountain, but relatively easy to climb. It makes our day for about 2 hours longer and takes some effort to gain extra vertical meters but the view from the top makes up for it.
Technically, it is not demanding or exposed, except for a short section that is well secured with a cable. After a day of hiking together, our guide will know you enough and will be able to recommend it or not on the spot.

Our tours are led by professional local guides. Our guides will make sure that you receive expert guiding combined with great fun and a memorable experience.

Our minimum age for tours is 8 years old. Children should be able to hike for 5-6 hours with stops for breaks. If you are planning to go on a tour with young kids, please let us know in advance and we can adjust the tour if necessary.
