Description
If you’re not quite ready to take on Mt. Triglav but would love to experience the magic of hiking in Slovenia’s incredible highlands, then this tour is right up your alley. Join us in climbing the highest easily accessible mountain in Triglav National Park. Viševnik is among the least demanding mountains to conquer, yet promises all the picture-perfect scenery and breathtakingly beautiful views of this Alpine heaven.
Viševnik is a 2050 m (6725 ft) mountain, famous for being accessible to anyone with basic hiking gear and the desire to walk high above the world in an unspoilt Alpine environment. Not to undermine this sexy mountain, but reaching its summit is definitely less demanding than most peaks of its size, making it suitable for families and holidaymakers with minimal hiking experience.
A very relaxing hike through the pristine forest of the Pokljuka Plateau leads us to our approach along a ski slope area. The ascent continues through an increasingly sparse forest, which gradually transforms into more rugged terrain, just as views of Pokljuka, the Bohinj Lake and surrounding mountains open up. Following this reasonably steep yet unchallenging ascent, we reach the southern slope that takes us to a lovely ridge just before the peak. From there, the highest peaks of the Julian Alps appear so close you could almost touch them.
Besides views of Triglav, Slovenia’s pride and joy, Viševnik also offers unforgettable scenes of other surrounding mountains: The neighbouring peaks of Mali and Veliki Draški vrh and Debela peč, one of the most beautiful views of the famous Pokljuka Plateau, the Lower Bohinj Mountains, the western parts of the Julian Alps, the northern Sava Plain and even the northern Karawanks and Kamnik-Savinja Alps to the east.

Things to know
Triglav is amongst the most popular mountains in Slovenia. It has a great symbolic value for us and the saying goes that you are not a true Slovenian until you stand on its summit. Therefore, you can expect a lot of people on the mountain in the high season (July-September), especially on weekends. On week-days, however, it is much more peaceful. Luckily, our guides have some tricks up their sleeves when it comes to avoiding the crowds. Hint: they know exactly when and where to go.
Thousands of people climb Mt.Triglav every year. Some come better prepared than others, who underestimate the climb, which can lead to accidents. But with the right approach, knowing the weather conditions (especially the possibility of thunderstorms and snowfall), with the proper safety equipment and an experienced guide, you can minimize the objective dangers and feel completely safe.
Mountain huts in the Slovenian mountains are very cosy and authentic, but provide only basic comfort. Don’t expect too much luxury. Early bookings are usually rewarded with a room but if all rooms are full there are dormitories. There is no shower and the lavatories are basic. There is running water but it is not drinkable. The food is tasty and local but the menu is limited to a few dishes and drinks.
The earlier the better. The highest season, from July to September, it is not unusual for huts to be fully booked for months ahead. Weekdays are better but we still suggest bookings at least a month in advance. Last-minute bookings are very dependable on the weather – if the forecast is not a perfect bluebird, then some spots usually become available a few days before.
It is important that your clothes are comfortable. It is recommended that you also have some warmer and windproof clothing with you as temperature can drop or in case of cold wind. You can always leave excess clothes in the van after consulting with our guide.
Even though Slovenia is small, it has quite a diverse climate, so it is not unusual for the weather to be better in another part of the country. In that case, we will suggest a different tour where the weather will be nice. If offered alternative tour doesn’t suit you or if the weather is not suitable for hiking, you will receive a full refund if you have already prepaid our tour.
The season stated is informative. In case of dry conditions, the tour is also possible sooner or later in the year. If there is early or late snow in the mountains the season is shorter. I that case take a look at our Viševnik in winter tour.
We believe that your experience will be better in smaller groups. Therefore, there will be a maximum of 8 guests per guide.
The tour is flexible and it can be adjusted to your preferences, skills and fitness. Nevertheless, you should be comfortable having a 4-hour hike on a moderate terrain.
Our tours are led by professional local guides. Our guides will make sure that you receive expert guiding combined with great fun and a memorable experience.
Children are also welcomed on the tour. Children should be able to hike for a few hours uphill with breaks. If you are planning to go on a tour with young kids, please let us know in advance and we can adjust the tour if necessary.
